Lee Chatfield

I have been an avid angler since I was first taken fishing by my dad at the age of 4 years old. I have been fishing for the last 37 years. I learnt the basics of fishing from my dad and grandad before taking up match fishing at 12 years old. I progressed onto the open match circuit at 16 and signed for the best team in Sussex two years later and went onto to captain the team in my late 20`s. I match fished all over the country in various open matches and team matches like winter leagues, summer leagues, super leagues, national championships, embassy champs etc. I had an enviable record whilst fishing competitions and won or placed consistently including a 3rd Individual place in a Division 2 National Championships. My favourite venues were always natural such as rivers, canals and reservoirs.

I fell out of love with match fishing due to the fact that the majority of matches were changing to commercial fisheries at the time and whilst I could catch Carp consistently, I lost my love of angling and needed a change of scene.

I then changed discipline and focused on using my match fishing edge in the specimen world to become a competent all-round angler. It has helped me to keep looking for a tactical edge and to make changes when things are not working. I have appeared in many features for angling publications and written many articles for sponsors websites over the years. The support of having a fantastic sponsor who have helped supply me with quality bait for the past 6 years has helped me to consistently put fish on the bank. I could not just fish for just one or two species as some anglers do but it`s each to their own and all anglers love fishing for different reasons.

I feel that the advantage of being an all round angler helps with my limited fishing time due to young family commitments because I can choose which species to target each week based on the weather conditions to help maximise my time to achieve targets. I am competent at most angling techniques in specimen fishing apart from lure fishing which I have spent very little time to learn!! My favourite style of fishing is trotting on rivers with a centrepin reel or fixed spool for Roach and Chub on the Hampshire Avon. The anglers who I respect the most are consistent anglers who regularly catch quality fish on limited time.
